Description

Veronica spicata 'Heidekind' is a delightful cultivar that stands out for its compact growth habit and stunning violet-blue flower spikes, making it an excellent choice for infusing early summer vibrancy into borders and rock gardens. This perennial produces dense, upright spikes adorned with these eye-catching flowers from late spring through mid-summer, creating a striking display that can brighten any landscape. The foliage consists of narrow, lance-shaped leaves that are a rich dark green, forming a neat basal mound that complements the floral show beautifully.

This plant thrives best in full sun, although it can also tolerate partial shade, making it versatile for various garden settings. It prefers well-drained soil and is adaptable to both sandy and loamy conditions, which allows it to flourish in different environments. Once established, Veronica spicata 'Heidekind' exhibits moderate drought tolerance, requiring regular watering during dry spells to maintain its health and vibrancy. This resilience makes it a practical choice for gardeners looking for low-maintenance options.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, this cultivar plays a vital role in supporting local wildlife, as it attracts bees and butterflies, thereby enhancing pollinator activity in the garden. Its suitability for rock gardens, mixed borders, and container planting further adds to its charm, allowing for creative landscaping possibilities. Hardy across the UK, Veronica spicata 'Heidekind' can withstand typical winter weather without the need for special protection, making it a reliable and beautiful addition to any garden. Height: 30 cm (12 in) Spread: 30 cm (12 in).

How to Grow
When planting Veronica, choose a sunny or semi-shaded position in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Veronica prefers a fertile, humus rich soil so work some well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil prior to planting.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Deadhead faded Veronica flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. In autumn, cut back old foliage and apply a mulch of well rotted manure to the base of the plant.
