How to choose the best floating aquatic plants

While water lilies are a commonly grown floating aquatic plant, there are several other choices for something a bit different. Choose frogbit (Hydrocharis morsus ranae) for dainty leaves and white flowers, or the water soldier (Stratiotes aloides), which hides underwater over winter, sending sword-like foliage up to the surface in spring.

For more aquatic pond advice, see our Frequently Asked Questions below.

Which floating aquatic plants provide the most shade?

Hydrocharis morsus ranae is a good choice for providing shade as it creates floating mat of foliage from new runners.

Which floating pond plants are best for small ponds?

Our pink water lily is beautiful, compact and ideal for small ponds. This hardy pond plant makes an exotic statement on still water.

Which floating aquatics are best for wildlife?

Stratiotes aloides (the water soldier) creates good shelter for wildlife. If you have fish, the tender Pistia stratiotes (water lettuce) provides excellent cover but it needs a frost-free pond.
