You should plant daffodil bulbs in the early autumn, from September to November. This allows them to establish well before winter and give you a stunning display of daffodils in the spring. Some gardeners like to get theirs in the ground as early as August! Learn more about the best time to plant daffodil bulbs over at our helpful blog.
If planting your daffodils in the ground, choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Dig holes to a depth of about 3 times the bulb's height, and drop them into the holes with the pointed end up. Cover with soil and water thoroughly. If you’re growing your bulbs in containers, they can be positioned a little more closely together. Leave about 5cm between bulbs but try not to let them touch each other or the sides of the pot.
Daffodils look best when planted in groups or clusters rather than rows. In borders, aim for at least 10-12 bulbs together to create a striking display. To naturalise narcissi in grass, plant up to as many as 50 or 60 bulbs per square metre. Make sure the planting is informal and remember that they will multiply each year to create bigger and bolder displays.
