Description

Pomegranate 'Favorite' is one of the hardiest varieties, forming a compact shrub that delivers both ornamental beauty and edible rewards in gardens or on patios.

Glossy green foliage sets the scene for rich orange-red, funnel-shaped flowers throughout summer, followed by small, sweet pomegranates ready to harvest in October and November. Remarkably quick to perform, it often begins fruiting just one or two years after planting, with bright red flesh that is exceptionally delicious. Best suited to a sheltered position such as a warm wall or courtyard, full ripening needs warmth, making this an excellent choice for container growing on a sunny patio or in a greenhouse/conservatory. Easy to care for and resilient, it brings Mediterranean character and vibrant colour to borders or pots.

Ultimate height and spread: 1.5m to 2.5m (4.9ft to 8.2ft).

How to Grow
Grow Pomegranate trees in rich fertile, well drained soil. For the best chances of fruiting choose a warm, sheltered position in full sun. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve drainage and soil fertility. Plant Pomegranates at the same soil level as they were growing at the nursery.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Keep weeds and grass clear from within a 30cm radius of base of the tree. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the tree. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer. Water Pomegranate trees well during particularly dry periods. Pomegranate is best grown as a multi-stemmed tree on a short stem. Prune Pomegranate plants from spring to summer. Select 3 or 4 low branches to form the main framework of the tree, and remove any misplaced, crowded and damaged branches. During the first 3 years shorten the main branches by a third of the previous season's growth to develop a well branched plant. Thereafter pruning should be kept to a minimum as over pruning can reduce fruiting. Pomegranates produce suckers and these should be removed from the base of the plant. Harvest Pomegranate fruits using secateurs when the crown at the base of the fruit has become curled and brown.
