Description

Create your own Mediterrranean oasis with this dwarf pomegranate standard!

Rarely seen in gardens, pomegranates are surprisingly showy shrubs with unusual bright orange flowers and attractive fruits. With improved hardiness, Pomegranate ‘Nana’ is a dwarf variety that is perfect for smaller gardens, forming a rounded, bushy shrub that is deciduous in the UK. For a long season over summer, it bears masses of vivid orange flowers with crepe-like petals that unfurl from stiff, funnel-shaped buds. Their bright vermillion colour stands out beautifully against the small, glossy green foliage. In hot seasons the flowers may be followed by miniature pomegranate fruits. In autumn, the foliage turns golden yellow adding further seasonal interest. This small standard version is great for growing on a sunny patio or in a sheltered courtyard, adding height to displays or framing doorways. Container grown plants should be moved into a frost-free position to overwinter.

Ultimate height and spread: 50cm to 1m (20in to 3.2ft).

How to Grow
Grow Pomegranate trees in rich fertile, well drained soil. For the best chances of fruiting choose a warm, sheltered position in full sun. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve drainage and soil fertility. Plant Pomegranates at the same soil level as they were growing at the nursery.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Keep weeds and grass clear from within a 30cm radius of base of the tree. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the tree. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer. Water Pomegranate trees well during particularly dry periods. Pomegranate is best grown as a multi-stemmed tree on a short stem. Prune Pomegranate plants from spring to summer. Select 3 or 4 low branches to form the main framework of the tree, and remove any misplaced, crowded and damaged branches. During the first 3 years shorten the main branches by a third of the previous season's growth to develop a well branched plant. Thereafter pruning should be kept to a minimum as over pruning can reduce fruiting. Pomegranates produce suckers and these should be removed from the base of the plant. Harvest Pomegranate fruits using secateurs when the crown at the base of the fruit has become curled and brown.
