Description

This fabulous banana palm is the perfect addition to any tropical planting scheme or as an exotic patio centrepiece. The gigantic, long leaves of Musa basjoo unfurl at the top of its woody stem for the summer months, creating shade and putting a tranquil, holiday feel into the space. Also known as Japanese banana palm, there’s no mistaking the distinct architectural appeal provided by the leaves. Once mature, a display of white flowers bring added interest to the display. During hot summers, these may even develop into small, edible green fruits. A tender palm suitable for growing in borders in milder parts of the UK, although it will need to be protected in winter. You can also grow this palm in a large container which can be moved under cover for the cooler months. Height: 5m (16’). Spread: 4m (13’).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
In very mild areas, grow Musa in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, with shelter from strong winds. In frost prone areas, Banana plants are best grown in containers of soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3, which can be moved to a warm frost-free greenhouse or conservatory in winter.
More Info
Feed weekly and water regularly throughout the growing season in spring and summer. Reduce watering in autumn, allowing the compost to partially dry out. As temperatures begin to fall, move container grown plants to a warm conservatory or greenhouse, and maintain a minimum temperature of 5C (41F). Plants grown outdoors should be wrapped with a protective layer of straw and hessian to protect them from cold winter weather.
