Description

Savour your own sweet satsumas, straight from your own garden!

One of the best sweet citrus to grow in the UK, Satsuma (Citrus Fruit) is a rarely available and relatively hardy variety of mandarin orange, native to cold regions of Asia. It produces soft, thin skinned, flattish fruits that are easily peeled to reveal juicy, sweet seedless flesh with a mild tang. The fruits ripen from late October to November.

Compact and virtually thorn-free, it is also a valuable ornamental tree with dark glossy leaves complementing clusters of fragrant, starry white flowers that can bloom throughout the year, attracting pollinators and filling the air with a sweet scent. This frost tender tree is best grown in containers on a sunny, sheltered patio for the summer and moved to a frost-free position indoors from autumn to spring. Alternatively, it suits growing in a frost-free conservatory/heated greenhouse all year round.

Satsuma offers year-round ornamental appeal, combining lush evergreen foliage with decorative flowers and manageable size, making it ideal for gardeners seeking both beauty and a delicious harvest. Ultimate height: 2m (6.5ft). Ultimate spread: 1m (3.2ft).

How to Grow
Plant citrus trees in patio containers in a mix of ericaceous compost and neutral, soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant at its original soil level and firm well into the new container. Water well and position in a frost free position in full sun.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Stand citrus trees outside from May to October. Water freely in summer and mist leaves daily to increase humidity and discourage pests. Feed with citrus plant fertiliser every 2 weeks. Move plants indoors from October to a bright, frost free position (4-12°C) away from cold draughts and radiators. Reduce watering in winter but do not let the plant dry out completely. Too much or too little water may cause the fruits to drop.
