Description

Prized for its distinctive and superior flavour profile, these intensely aromatic fruits are revered amongst gourmet chefs. They are a star ingredient of Key Lime Pie and are also known as the Bartender’s Lime due to their popular use in cocktails.

Smaller in size yet bursting with flavour, the Florida Key Lime or Mexican Lime stands out with its intense tartness and distinctively aromatic profile. Measuring between 4-6cm in diameter, each fruit boasts a thinner skin and more seeds. The fruits eventually ripen to a pale yellow but for the best flavour should be harvested whilst still green.

The Key Lime forms a bushy, thorny shrub or small tree with glossy, evergreen foliage. Flowers and fruit can appear throughout the year but are most abundant from May to September. The creamy-white flowers emit a captivating fragrance, making Citrus plants a cherished addition to conservatories and patios, infusing any space with their enchanting perfume over an extended season.

Hardy to 5°C, they are best grown outdoors from May to October, and brought inside for the winter.

Eventual height: 3m (9'). Spread: 2.5m (8').

Estimated time to cropping once planted: 1 year.

Estimated time to best yields: 3 years.

How to Grow
Plant citrus trees in patio containers in a mix of ericaceous compost and neutral, soil based compost. Repot the plant at its original soil level and firm well into the new container. Water well and position in a frost free position in full sun.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Stand citrus trees outside from May to October. Water freely in summer and mist leaves daily to increase humidity and discourage pests. Feed with citrus plant fertiliser every 2 weeks. Move plants indoors from October to a bright, frost free position (4-12°C) away from cold draughts and radiators. Reduce watering in winter but do not let the plant dry out completely. Too much or too little water may cause the fruits to drop.
