Lasting a lifetime in the garden, the sumptuous blooms of Peony Sorbet Bouquet Mix bring almost effortless glamour to the garden and indoor vase displays. These undemanding herbaceous peonies offer extravagant flowers and evocative scent with large, full-petalled blooms that rise above clumps of deeply divided, dark green foliage from late spring to early summer.

Peony Sorbet Bouquet Mix contains the following varieties:

  • Peony ‘Bowl of Cream’ – Fragrant, ruffled, fully double creamy-white blooms. Ultimate height: 90cm (35in). Ultimate spread: 70cm (27in).
  • Peony ‘Fiona’ – Double, ruffled, fuchsia pink petals with paler edges are held on dark red stems against very dark foliage. Ultimate height and spread: 90cm (35in).
  • Peony ‘Red Sarah Bernhardt’ - Full-petalled, lightly scented, deep purplish-red double peony. Ultimate height: 90cm (35in). Ultimate spread:  70cm (27in).
  • Peony ‘Sebastiaan Maas’ Large, highly fragrant, rich pink semi-double peony. Ultimate height: 90cm (35in) Ultimate spread: 50cm (20in).

Culinary note: The petals can be added to salads, or cooked slightly and sweetened for a treat. Peony water was also once considered a delicacy and the blooms can be floated in punches. For more details about edible flowers click here.

How to Grow

Grow peonies in a sunny or semi shaded position. They prefer a well drained, rich fertile soil. This is best achieved by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or compost to the soil prior to planting, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Plant herbaceous peonies at a depth of around 5cm (2") below the soil surface. Planting too deeply may delay flowering.

These bareroot peonies are lifted from the nursery field when dormant and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. The crown should be planted no more than 2.5–5cm below the surface. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. New growth will appear in spring. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water regularly until peony plants are fully established. Thereafter, herbaceous peonies require little maintenance and will grow happily for many years if left undisturbed. However, they will appreciate a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost applied around the base of the plant in spring. Plants may take several years to establish before they produce their spectacular peony flowers.
