Flowering Months
Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. This variety of clematis flowers in early spring on the previous year's growth. Pruning should be undertaken in summer, after flowering. When pruning Clematis montana, remove any damaged or dead stems entirely before cutting back the remaining stems to a pair of healthy buds to maintain the plant within its allotted space. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in order to protect the roots and conserve soil moisture.
Pot up clematis plants and grow them on until large enough to plant in their final positions. When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3") below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.

Fast growing 2016-07-24

Really fast growing, although for some reason one out of the four I bought failed to grow. Its not dead, it just hasn't grown! They haven't flowered this year but as they've covered my climbing frames and wall already I'm sure next year they will flower profusely.

T&M replied on 2016-07-25: Thank you very much for your review. I am glad that you have been happy with your purchase, although I am sorry to learn that one of your plants has failed to grow. If there is anything we can be of help with at all, please contact our Customer Care Team at ccare@thompson-morgan.com.

Fabulous plants 2014-12-07

I received my clematis montana which were a good size and very healthy, now planted out they are growing with gusto. I can't wait for them to cover that trellis ready for next year. I also want to comment on the exemplary customer service that I have experienced from Thompson & Morgan. They responded to a problem immediately and even followed it up with a telephone call. Thank you!

When will it flower ! 2014-08-10

I ordered my clematis back in February, it duly arrived and I followed the planting instructions, looked after it all summer - not one flower - SO disappointed.

T&M replied on 2014-10-08: Thank you for your review. I am very sorry to hear of your disappointment with your recent purchase. If you would like to contact our Customer care team on ccare@thompson-morgan.com, one of our agents will be happy to investigate this matter further.

What an amazing plant!! 2014-06-20

This plant literally romps away needing little aftercare. If you want to cover a trellis quickly this is your plant. Very wind resistant too!

T&M replied on 2014-06-23: Thank you for your review. I hope we can continue to be of service.
