Description

A large and majestic fern, deservedly named the Royal Fern. Osmunda regalis forms bushy crowns of huge, simple fronds, up to 6ft in height. In spring, the fronds emerge a luminous acid green and are strongly erect – making an eye-catching sight in the spring sunshine. Mature fronds become pendulous and are accompanied by upright, fertile fronds that emerge from the centre of the crown, resembling rusty brown flowerheads. These fertile fronds continue to provide an attractive feature throughout winter. This deciduous fern provides further interest in autumn when the fronds turn shades of copper.

Osmunda regalis makes a statuesque specimen fern for bog gardens and the margins of ponds and streams in acid soils that remain reliably moist. This native fern is becoming increasingly rare in the wild and deserves to be more widely grown. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height: 2m (6.5ft). Spread: 1m (3.2ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Plant in partial shade in fertile, acid or neutral soil in a position that is reliably moist and cool. Ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established. Leave old fronds on over winter to protect the crown. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around each plant in spring.
