Description
Elder Tree (Sambucus nigra) in a Pot Elder is a small tree, popular for gardens, providing a display of fragrant flowers and soot-dark fruits. You can use the flowers create cordial and the fruit for wine and preserves. According to folklore, if you burn elder wood, you will see the devil, but if you plant elder by your house it would keep the devil away. The flowers appear in May – June and the vitamin C rich berries ripen in late summer. Elder is common across the UK and its flowers provide nectar for a variety of insects and the berries are eaten by birds and mammals. Typically, Elder will grow to between 5 – 7 metres

How to Grow
We recommend mulching and regular watering during the drier periods in the first year or so of growth.

Why buy a potted trees vs a bareroot? Cotswold Trees supply potted trees as we have found these have the best chance of survival and do allow you to plant trees throughout the year. The cooler, wetter months are always the best time to plant a tree and allow it to establish a new root system whilst it remains fairly dormant. Despite this, potted trees can be planted successfully throughout the spring and summer if they are well looked after. You may find other suppliers offer bareroot and plug plants which are often cheaper options, especially when buying trees in bulk, but these tend to take a little longer to establish.
