Description

A grandiflora for the smaller garden, Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’ is a petite replica of those magnificent Magnolia grandifloras growing up the walls of stately homes that you may have admired with envy.

Magnolia ‘Little Gem’ forms a small, columnar, evergreen tree, densely clothed in glossy, leathery leaves up to 12cm long, that are covered in rusty felting on the underside. In late summer and autumn, it bears an abundance of large, lightly fragrant, creamy-white, cup-shaped flowers. The blooms are followed by red, cone-like fruits, extending interest into the autumn. Unlike its giant counterpart, Magnolia ‘Little Gem’ begins to flower at a young age.

Its narrow, columnar habit makes Magnolia ‘Little Gem’ particularly well-suited to training up a sheltered wall or as a focal ornamental tree where space is limited. It can even be grown in a large container. Slow growing, it requires minimal pruning, eventually forming a large shrub or small tree. Magnolia ‘Little Gem’ is low maintenance and drought tolerant once established, making a rewarding choice for a sunny, sheltered position. Maximum height: 8m (26ft). Maximum spread: 4m (13ft).

How to Grow
Plant magnolias in a sunny or semi shaded position with protection from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolias prefer a rich, moist, well drained, acid to neutral soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Magnolia plants establish quicker when their roots are shaded. Following planting, apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, manure or garden compost, taking care not to mound it around the stem of the plant.
More Info
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young magnolias are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted bark chips or garden compost to the base of the plant. Magnolias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape and remove damaged stems or crossing stems.
