Description

One of the most spectacular small trees, Cornus controversa provides an exceptional combination of winning qualities: an elegant habit, beautiful flowers and stunning autumn colour.

This slow-growing tree develops a succession of layered branches held in graceful tiers which are clothed in bright green leaves. In May/June the tiers are decked with an abundance of blooms, composed of flattish clusters of tiny, star-like, creamy-white flowers which are followed by blue-black fruit. Autumn delivers another season of interest, when the leaves put on a stunning display of rich red and purple tones. Throughout winter, Cornus controversa continues to exert a presence in the garden, its bare branches forming an elegant silhouette.

An outstanding tree for a medium to large garden with moisture-retentive soil. Maximum height and spread: 15m (49ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Cornus trees in rich fertile, well drained, neutral to acid soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve drainage and soil fertility. Plant dogwood trees in a sunny or semi-shaded position.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water flowering dogwoods regularly until fully established. Once established, Cornus trees require only occasional attention. Pruning dogwood is best kept to a minimum, removing only occasional damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant in late winter or early spring. As the tree matures the lower branches can be removed to create a clear trunk. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or other organic matter around the base of the plant in spring. Caution: Fruits are harmful if eaten, leaf hairs may irritate skin and eyes.
