Description

Verbascum 'Sugar Plum' is an eye-catching perennial that stands tall and proud, celebrated for its vibrant flower color and elegant vertical form. This plant brings a delightful burst of interest to sunny borders and gravel gardens, where it not only adds structure but also infuses the landscape with its rich hues. The striking flower spikes, adorned with clusters of sugar-plum purple blooms and bright orange-yellow stamens, create a stunning visual display that captivates the eye throughout the growing season.

Blooming from early to mid-summer, Verbascum 'Sugar Plum' often rewards gardeners with a second wave of flowers if the spent spikes are promptly removed. At its base, the plant forms a lovely low mound of soft, grey-green foliage, which contributes to its overall charm and creates a beautiful rosette shape. This perennial thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, demonstrating remarkable adaptability to various conditions, including poor, dry, or stony ground. Once established, it exhibits excellent drought tolerance, making it an ideal choice for Mediterranean-style gardens or gravel landscapes.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, Verbascum 'Sugar Plum' plays a vital role in supporting local ecosystems by attracting pollinators, particularly bees, which enhances the biodiversity of your garden. While it may have a relatively short lifespan, it has the potential to self-seed lightly, ensuring that it can continue to grace your garden without becoming invasive. Fully hardy in the UK, this resilient perennial can withstand cold weather, making it a reliable and beautiful addition to any garden setting. Height: 90 cm (35 in) Spread: 45 cm (18 in).
