Flowering Months

Often grown as a biennial or short lived perennial, Verbascum phlomoides 'Banana Custard' is a dramatic plant for the back of the border. Tall yellow flower spikes rise above low rosettes of grey-green foliage from June to August. This striking architectural plant is loved by pollinating insects and prized for summer bouquets. Let it self-seed after flowering to ensure a new batch of Mullein plants next spring, which will flower in the following year. Height: 180cm (71"). Spread: 60cm (24").

How to Grow

Plant Mullein into well drained, neutral or alkaline soil in full sun. Verbascum will thrive on poor, gravelly soils.

Established Verbascum plants require little maintenance. Deadhead faded flower spikes to encourage more verbascum flowers to be produced. Alternatively, leave the faded blooms to set seed to ensure a new batch of Mullein plants next spring. On very fertile soils, verbascum will grow larger in size and the tall flower stems may require staking with garden canes. Cut back the old stems at the base of the plant in autumn.
