Description

Sciadopitys verticillata is a truly distinctive conifer, the sole member of its genus and known as the Umbrella Pine for its striking leaf arrangement. Soft and lustrous, dark green needles, up to 13 cm long, are arranged in elegant whorls that resemble the spokes of an umbrella.

With origins dating back 230 million years, it is considered a living fossil and holds a revered place in Japanese culture, where it was once reserved exclusively for imperial use.

Young trees grow quickly with a neat pyramidal shape, gradually broadening and slowing with age. Mature specimens produce oval green cones that ripen to brown. With its graceful form, rich history, and unusual foliage, Sciadopitys verticillata makes a striking specimen for borders or large containers. Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding qualities. Ultimate height: 15m (49ft). Ultimate spread: 6m (19.6ft).
