Feed and water rose plants regularly and deadhead faded flowers. When growing roses it is necessary to remove any suckers that arise from the base of the plant, below the graft union.
Ramblers flower on flexible stems with many new stems being continually produced from the base. Due to their vigour, they can quickly become a tangle of branches if not pruned regularly. Ramblers can be pruned in late summer or winter. The advantage of winter pruning is that it is easier to work with the rose and see pruning cuts when the stems are leafless. Begin pruning ramblers by removing dead and diseased wood, and any rubbing or damaged stems. For the first two years the remaining stems should be trained horizontally on wires until satisfactory coverage has been achieved. From the third year, the main stems can be reduced to maintain the plant within the available growing space. Prune out all the stems that have flowered and tie new ones in to take their place. Side shoots should be reduced by about two thirds to encourage branching. In winter, remove up to 1/3 of the very oldest stems right down to the base to encourage the production of new, vigorous, replacement stems. Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant after pruning.
