Description

Rhododendron dichroanthum subsp. 'Scyphocalix' grabs attention with its unusual bicoloured flowers. This compact, evergreen shrub is ideal for smaller gardens or as a standout accent. Its slow-growing, rounded form reaches up to 1.5m, carrying dark green leaves softly felted in white or grey beneath. From late spring to early summer, it produces loose clusters of three to five bell-shaped flowers in gold and orange, blushed with pink or red towards the edges, offering valuable colour later in the season than most other rhododendrons. Ultimate height: 1.5m (4.9ft). Ultimate spread: 2m (6.5ft).

How to Grow
Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. Inkharo Group Rhododendrons respond well to pruning - trim them immediately after flowering in summer.
