Description
Buxus sempervirens is one of the most useful evergreen shrubs in the garden! Its small, glossy green leaves are densely packed on slow growing, bushy plants. A stalwart of the cottage garden and stately home alike, Box has traditionally been used to form neat Box hedges, border edges and fabulous topiary. Well loved for its ability to withstand regular clipping, Box plants provide low maintenance structure to the garden all year round. Supplied as 25 - 30cm bareroots (10 - 12") or in 9cm potted plants. Height: 8m (26'). Spread: 8m (26'). Planting Distance: 20cm (8")

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Box plants in any fertile, moist, well drained garden soil, or plant in containers of soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Choose a position in sun or semi shade. On dry soils, Buxus sempervirens will prefer a semi shaded position. Improve poor, dry soils by incorporating plenty of well rotted manure prior to planting.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

More Info
Water Box plants well until fully established. Box plants are relatively low maintenance but will require trimming once a year in mid Summer to maintain a neat shape. Choose an overcast day to avoid sun scorch. Feed and mulch Buxus sempervirens plants after pruning to promote healthy new growth. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.
