Awarded an RHS AGM for its garden performance, Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea 'Dart's Red Lady' is a particularly striking cultivar. The young foliage is deep purple, making a fabulous contrast with its pale yellow flowers which are carried along the length of each stem in early spring. The red berries that follow stand out nicely against the dark leaves. As autumn brings a change in the weather, the foliage responds by turning to scarlet red before they fall. This spreading deciduous Japanese Barberry makes a colourful specimen shrub. Loved by pollinating insects, it is equally useful in wildlife areas. Height: 50cm (19"). Spread: 50cm (19").

How to Grow

Plant Berberis in full sun or partial shade, on a reliably moist, well-drained soil. Barberry plants are extremely resilient and will grow on many different soil types, except waterlogged.

To keep hedges in good shape, trim back lightly after flowering each year. You should also remove dead, diseased or damaged growth. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
