Raspberry 'Summer Chef' is a remarkable everbearing variety that stands out for its impressive yield of large, sweet, and juicy berries, making it a favorite among gardeners and fruit enthusiasts alike. This cultivar is particularly valued for its exceptional flavor, which is perfect for both fresh consumption and various processing methods. One of its most appealing features is its ability to produce two distinct harvests each year: a summer crop from the previous year’s canes and an autumn crop from the current year’s growth. This dual harvest capability allows for an extended fruiting season, providing ample opportunities to enjoy these delicious berries.
The canes of 'Summer Chef' are either thornless or possess very few thorns, which significantly simplifies the harvesting process. This characteristic, combined with the plant's vigorous growth habit, results in sturdy, upright canes that can support the weight of heavy fruit loads without bending or breaking. To thrive, this raspberry variety prefers well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter, as this promotes healthy growth and optimal fruit development. Additionally, it requires full sun exposure to enhance the sweetness and overall quality of the berries, making careful site selection essential for successful cultivation.
In terms of care, 'Summer Chef' is well-suited to the UK climate, demonstrating hardiness in cold winters down to approximately -15°C. To maintain the health and productivity of the plants, it is advisable to prune out old canes after fruiting, which encourages new growth and helps sustain the vigor of the raspberry bushes. This variety is ideal for home gardens, allotments, and even small-scale commercial fruit production, offering a delightful and rewarding gardening experience for those who choose to grow it. 1 x 3 Litre Potted Plant (KH3897)
Grow raspberry plants in a sunny position in any well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. The stems of this compact variety will require some support such as a framework of wires stretched horizontally between two posts. When growing raspberries in containers, support their tall stems on a wigwam of canes.
Plant raspberry canes against their supports, allowing a distance of 60cm (24") between plants. Water well.
Instead of cutting all the fruited canes to ground level like other Primocane varieties, use a double-cropping pruning regime. Select the strongest 6-8 canes, reducing them to about 1m in height. These canes will crop in June the following year and should be cut down to the ground after they have been harvested. A later autumn crop will be produced on the current year’s canes.
Water raspberries well for the first year until plants are fully established. Loosely tie the stems in to their support wires as they grow. When berries begin to develop, place a net over the plants to protect the crop from birds. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the canes in spring. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer.

Summer fruiting: In autumn, prune the canes which have fruited over summer to ground level. Canes which have not fruited should be 'tied in' to their supports. Aim to have 6 to 8 fruiting canes per plant.
Autumn fruiting: Prune all raspberry canes to ground level each February.
