Raspberry 'Autumn Happy' stands out as a favored summer-fruiting variety, celebrated for its dependable yield of high-quality, sweet, and firm berries. These delightful fruits are not only perfect for enjoying fresh but also freeze exceptionally well, making them a versatile addition to any kitchen. The plant produces a single, bountiful crop each summer from two-year-old canes, ensuring that gardeners can look forward to a generous harvest year after year.
The berries themselves are medium to large in size, boasting a vibrant red hue and a satisfying firmness. Their flavor profile strikes an excellent balance between sweetness and acidity, making them a favorite for both casual snacking and culinary creations. The canes of the 'Autumn Happy' variety are vigorous and notably thornless, which simplifies the harvesting process and makes it a more enjoyable experience for gardeners. With an upright growth habit and strong, sturdy canes, this raspberry plant is well-suited for various growing conditions.
To thrive, 'Autumn Happy' prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and requires full sun exposure to maximize fruit size and flavor. It is well-adapted to the UK climate, withstanding winter temperatures as low as -15°C. To maintain healthy growth, it is advisable to provide support through staking or a trellis, which helps keep the canes upright and promotes better air circulation. After the fruiting season, pruning out old canes is essential to encourage robust new growth, making this variety an excellent choice for home gardens, allotments, and even small-scale commercial operations. 1 x 3 Litre Potted Plant (KH3896)
Grow raspberry plants in a sunny position in any well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. The stems of this compact variety will require some support such as a framework of wires stretched horizontally between two posts. When growing raspberries in containers, support their tall stems on a wigwam of canes.
Plant raspberry canes against their supports, allowing a distance of 60cm (24") between plants. Water well.Â
Instead of cutting all the fruited canes to ground level like other Primocane varieties, use a double-cropping pruning regime. Select the strongest 6-8 canes, reducing them to about 1m in height.  These canes will crop in June the following year and should be cut down to the ground after they have been harvested. A later autumn crop will be produced on the current year’s canes.
Water raspberries well for the first year until plants are fully established. Loosely tie the stems in to their support wires as they grow. When berries begin to develop, place a net over the plants to protect the crop from birds. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the canes in spring. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer.

Summer fruiting: In autumn, prune the canes which have fruited over summer to ground level. Canes which have not fruited should be 'tied in' to their supports. Aim to have 6 to 8 fruiting canes per plant.
Autumn fruiting: Prune all raspberry canes to ground level each February.
