Description

Summer Fruiting.

Raspberry 'Cascade Delight' produces an abundance of large, conical berries which are notably larger than traditional varieties. Crops can be harvested from July onwards, and keep well after picking. With a delicious sweet flavour and a firm texture, they are ideal for eating fresh in summer desserts or making preserves. This summer fruiting variety shows particularly good resistance to root rot, and copes well in wetter soils where other varieties fail to thrive. Height: 150cm (59"). Spread: 50cm (20").

6 bare root raspberry canes (KC3047)
12 bare root raspberry canes (KC3048)
3 bare root raspberry canes (KC3046)
10 raspberry long canes (KC4672)

How to Grow

Grow summer fruiting raspberry plants in a sunny position in any well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. The stems of these long caned summer fruiting raspberries will require support. Before planting, prepare a framework of wires stretched horizontally between two sturdy 1.8m (6') posts. When growing raspberries in containers, support their tall stems on a wigwam of canes.

Plant raspberry canes against their supports, allowing a distance of 60cm (24") between plants. Water well. Summer fruiting raspberries fruit on the previous season’s growth. Leave unpruned after planting. This cane will go on to produce fruit next summer, at the same time, new shoots will grow from the roots. Once fruit has been picked the original cane should be removed and the new shoots left to grow to produce fruit the following year.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

Water summer fruiting raspberries well, particularly during dry periods. When berries begin to develop, place a net over the plants to protect the crop from birds.

Water summer fruiting raspberries well, particularly during dry periods. When berries begin to develop, place a net over the plants to protect the crop from birds. Each autumn, prune out the canes which have fruited over the summer, cutting them back to the base of the plant. Leave the remaining canes in place for fruiting in the following year. Aim to have 6 to 8 fruiting canes per plant. (If your plant does not fruit in the first year then there is no need to prune it at all until the following year, when you should remove only the canes which have produced fruit.) Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the canes in spring. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer.
