Description

Whilst it’s easy to be seduced by colourful flowers, it is colourful foliage that delivers the longest season of interest in the garden and Physocarpus is one of the best for this purpose. The glossy, dark red-brown foliage of Physocarpus ‘Rubella’ creates depth and drama in borders for months. Contrast it with lime or silver foliage for added impact. Additional interest is provided by clusters of small creamy-white flowers in summer followed by red fruit that mature to black. Pollinators love the flowers whilst birds are attracted to the berries, making Physocarpus ‘Rubella’ a great plant for wildlife too. ‘Rubella’ forms a fast-growing, upright, bushy deciduous shrub that thrives in neutral to acid soils. Height: 1.2m (4ft). Spread: 1m (39in).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Plant Physocarpus in a fertile, moist, well-drained soil in full sun or semi-shade. Physocarpus plants prefer an acid to neutral soil, but will tolerate more alkaline soils, although may they may become chlorotic in very chalky areas. Incorporate organic matter such as well-rotted manure or compost into the soil prior to planting.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info

Water regularly throughout the growing season until young Physocarpus plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. After flowering, cut back the flowered shoots to a healthy pair of buds, unless seedheads are required for late season interest.

Physocarpus opulifolius tolerates fairly hard pruning and may be cut back by half every few years to maintain a smaller size. On mature plants cut back about one quarter to one fifth of the oldest shoots to their base, to promote strong new growth.
