Physocarpus opulifolius 'Fireside' is an eye-catching deciduous shrub that captivates with its deep, dark foliage and vibrant seasonal transformations. This cultivar has been specifically developed to enhance leaf retention and bolster resistance against diseases, ensuring that it remains a stunning feature in any garden throughout the year. The dramatic hues of its leaves, combined with charming flowers and unique exfoliating bark, create a multi-dimensional visual appeal that is hard to overlook.
The foliage of 'Fireside' showcases a rich palette that ranges from deep burgundy to nearly black, maintaining its striking color well into the season. As new growth emerges, it bursts forth in a vivid red, providing a stunning contrast to the older leaves and enhancing the overall aesthetic of the shrub. In late spring to early summer, clusters of delicate flowers bloom in soft shades of pink to white, further enriching the plant's ornamental value. Following the flowering period, small red seed capsules develop, adding yet another layer of interest to this already captivating shrub.
The bark of 'Fireside' is another noteworthy feature, peeling away in thin layers to reveal a reddish-brown inner bark on mature stems, which adds texture and character to the plant. This shrub thrives best in full sun, where its foliage can achieve optimal color, although it can tolerate partial shade as well. Preferring well-drained soil, 'Fireside' is also drought-tolerant once established, making it a practical choice for various garden settings. Notably, it exhibits greater resistance to powdery mildew compared to older varieties, making it a reliable and attractive option for gardeners looking to create a focal point, enhance mixed borders, or establish informal hedges. Water regularly throughout the growing season until young Physocarpus plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. After flowering, cut back the flowered shoots to a healthy pair of buds, unless seedheads are required for late season interest.
Physocarpus opulifolius tolerates fairly hard pruning and may be cut back by half every few years to maintain a smaller size. On mature plants cut back about one quarter to one fifth of the oldest shoots to their base, to promote strong new growth.
