Bite into the succulent sweetness of Diospyros kaki 'Jiro', a striking Japanese persimmon tree that marries ornamental charm with deliciously crisp fruit and vibrant autumn colour.
This self-fertile deciduous tree produces plentiful, large, bright orange fruits from October to December. The fruits are non-astringent and perfectly sweet even when firm, ideal for eating straight from the tree or slicing into salads and desserts. Glossy green foliage turns glorious shades of gold, orange and red in autumn, and the handsome canopy often retains its fruit after the leaves fall, bringing winter interest to your garden or patio. Loved for its manageable size and reliable cropping, ‘Jiro’ offers low-maintenance appeal and year-round beauty. Ultimate height and spread: 3.5m (11.5ft) to 4.5m (15ft).

Fruit and nut trees do not suffer weed competition well, so keep weeds and grass clear from within a 30cm radius of base of the tree. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the tree. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer. Water Sharon fruit trees well during particularly dry periods.
Persimmon trees are best grown as a multi-stemmed tree on a short stem. Prune Sharon fruit plants in spring before new growth starts. Select 3 or 4 low branches to form the main framework of the tree, and remove any misplaced, crowded and damaged branches to develop a well shaped plant. Thereafter pruning should be kept to a minimum and the plant should be allowed to develop naturally.
Harvest Sharon fruits from October to December when the fruits become soft.
