Description

Lonicera periclymenum 'Sweet Sue' is a charming addition to any garden, known for its fragrant flowers, attractive berries, and ability to support pollinators and birds. This deciduous, twining climber grows at a moderate pace, reaching its ultimate size in 5 to 10 years. With rounded blue-green leaves, it creates a lush backdrop for clusters of creamy-white, tubular flowers that transition to yellow as they bloom from mid-summer to early autumn. The strong evening scent of these flowers attracts various pollinators, while the ornamental red berries that appear in autumn provide nourishment for local birds.

This versatile plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil, adaptable to chalk, clay, loam, or sandy conditions. Fully hardy in the UK, it can be positioned in north, south, east, or west-facing areas and tolerates both exposed and sheltered sites. Ideal for training over trellises, fences, or pergolas, 'Sweet Sue' can also thrive in large pots with proper care. To ensure healthy growth, plant it at least 30 cm away from walls or fences, prune after flowering, and maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry spells. A balanced spring fertilizer will further promote its vigorous growth, with a potential height of 7 meters and a spread of 1.5 meters.

How to Grow
Grow Lonicera in any moist, well drained garden soil. Shrubby honeysuckles enjoy a sunny or semi-shaded position.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water lonicera regularly throughout the growing season until they are fully established. Check young shoot tips regularly as honeysuckle plants are susceptible to aphid damage, particularly when grown in full sun. Prune immediately after flowering, first removing the oldest stems, then reducing the remaining stems to restrict their vigorous growth to the available space. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant in spring. Caution: Honeysuckle berries are harmful if eaten.
