Description

Hippophae rhamnoides ‘Botanika’, commonly known as Sea-buckthorn, is a robust and fruitful shrub that stands out for its abundant, nutrient-rich berries, striking silvery foliage, and remarkable adaptability. Thriving in sunny, well-drained locations, this plant is an excellent choice for informal hedges, edible gardens, or wildlife-friendly landscapes in temperate regions. Its vibrant yellow-orange berries, which begin to appear in August, not only add a splash of color but are also packed with essential vitamins A, C, and E, making them a valuable addition to any garden.

The Sea-buckthorn is characterized by its evergreen, lanceolate leaves that exhibit a silvery-green hue, with a grey underside that enhances its visual appeal. This deciduous shrub produces fragrant yellow-green flowers in the spring, with separate male and female plants required for successful fruiting. To ensure a bountiful harvest, it is essential to have a male pollinator nearby. Additionally, this remarkable plant has the unique ability to fix nitrogen in the soil through a symbiotic relationship with Frankia bacteria, allowing it to thrive even in poor, sandy, or alkaline soils.

Reaching heights of up to 350 cm and spreading 250 cm at maturity, the Sea-buckthorn is a fast-growing species that is hardy to approximately -30 °C, making it suitable for most regions in the UK. Its bushy, thorny habit can lead to the production of root suckers, allowing it to naturalize if left unmanaged. While the berries are tart when consumed raw, they provide essential winter interest and serve as a food source for wildlife, making this shrub a delightful and functional addition to any garden. Height: 350 cm (138 in) Spread: 250 cm (98 in)
