Description

Gooseberry Easycrisp® ‘Mr. Green®’ redefines the classic green gooseberry with superb sweetness, rich flavour and remarkably easy picking. This highly productive variety produces large, hairless, light green berries with thin skin and a juicy balance of sweetness and gentle acidity that places it among the finest-tasting gooseberries available. Harvesting begins from late June, bringing an early crop of delicious fruit perfect for eating fresh straight from the bush. With very few thorns, excellent disease resistance and strong tolerance to powdery mildew, it offers outstanding garden performance with minimal fuss. Its compact, bushy habit makes it ideal for smaller spaces while still delivering exceptionally heavy yields year after year. Its exceptionally heavy crops can occasionally cause the branches to bend, so light support may be helpful in particularly productive years. Ultimate height and spread: 1.2m (4ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Plant gooseberry bushes in an open sunny position on any well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate a generous amount of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Remove any shoots or dormant buds from the base of the plant as these will produce unwanted suckers later on. Goosberries should be planted at a distance of 1.5m (5') apart at their original depth which is indicated by a mark left on the stem by the nursery soil.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info

Water well for the first year until plants are fully established. When growing gooseberries, the soil must not dry out during hot periods, particularly while the fruit is being formed. Remove any suckers from the base of the plant as they arise. Netting the bushes will help to protect the currants from birds. Harvest some gooseberries for cooking and freezing in May, leaving the remaining fruit to ripen fully in June for eating fresh from the bush.

Prune gooseberry plants in winter. Remove dead, damaged and crossing stems, before thinning the remaining stems to create an upright open bush. Shorten the remaining stems by half. In spring apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil.
