Description

The earliest and one of the most popular of Cranberries, cropping from late August. Cranberry 'Early Black' forms a spreading, evergreen bush that is suitable for borders with acid soils or containers filled with ericaceous compost. Bears large, dark red-purple fruit that is packed with Vitamin C. The berries can be eaten straight from the plant or made into cakes, juices and jams. As well as their edible fruits, Cranberries make attractive ornamental shrubs, with bell-shaped spring flowers and bronzed autumn foliage providing plenty of seasonal interest. Height and spread: 60cm (24in).

How to Grow
Cranberries plants require a well drained, acid soil in a sunny or semi shaded position. When growing cranberry plants in areas where acid soil does not naturally occur, try planting them in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous compost and John Innes No. 3.
More Info
If possible, cranberry bushes should be watered with rainwater because the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. As fruits begin to develop, cover the plants with netting to protect the berries from birds. Cranberries require little pruning except for the occasional removal of damaged or misplaced shoots. Culinary note: Cranberries, are high in vitamins and nutrients. If made into a juice, gargled then swallowed, it can be used as an effective treatment for sore throats, coughs and colds.
