Description

Digitalis purpurea 'Giant Spotted' is a captivating biennial or short-lived perennial cultivar that enchants garden enthusiasts with its impressive tall spikes adorned with tubular, bell-shaped flowers. These blooms, which grace the garden from early to mid-summer, showcase a delightful palette that ranges from pristine white to soft pink and deep purple. Each flower is further embellished with striking maroon and purple spots within the throat, creating a visual spectacle that draws the eye and adds a touch of elegance to any landscape. This cultivar not only serves as a stunning focal point but also brings vertical interest to garden borders and cottage gardens, making it a versatile choice for both formal and informal settings.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, Digitalis purpurea 'Giant Spotted' plays a vital role in attracting pollinators, such as bees and hummingbirds, which are essential for a thriving garden ecosystem. The flowers' rich colors and unique patterns serve as a beacon for these creatures, enhancing the vibrancy of the garden while supporting biodiversity. This cultivar is particularly well-suited for those who appreciate the beauty of nature and wish to create a sanctuary that invites wildlife, all while enjoying the luxurious display of color and form that these flowers provide.

To ensure optimal growth, Digitalis purpurea 'Giant Spotted' flourishes in conditions ranging from full sun to partial shade, thriving in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Once established, it demonstrates remarkable hardiness, particularly in the UK, where it can withstand frost, making it a reliable choice for gardeners seeking resilience alongside beauty. As a biennial or short-lived perennial, it typically flowers in its second year before completing its life cycle, yet it generously self-seeds, ensuring that its legacy continues to grace gardens for years to come. This combination of elegance, ecological benefit, and ease of care makes Digitalis purpurea 'Giant Spotted' a truly luxurious addition to any garden. Height: 150cm (59 in) Spread: 45cm (18 in)
