Description

Distylium 'Swing Low' is an exquisite evergreen shrub that captivates with its compact, low-spreading form and stunning blue-green foliage. Designed primarily for groundcover, this resilient plant is drought-tolerant and resistant to diseases, making it an ideal choice for various garden environments. While it remains a rarity in UK gardens, it serves as a modern alternative to traditional box hedging, enhanced by its understated winter blooms that provide a touch of seasonal charm.

Reaching a height of 75 cm and a spread of 150 cm, this shrub exhibits a low, mounding growth habit with dense branching. Its small, reddish-maroon flowers emerge in late winter to early spring, offering a subtle yet delightful detail to the landscape. The soft, fine-textured leaves maintain their appeal throughout the year, ensuring that the garden remains vibrant even in the colder months.

Thriving in full sun to partial shade, Distylium 'Swing Low' prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil but adapts well to various soil types. Once established, it requires minimal watering and is semi-hardy in the UK, needing protection in colder regions. This versatile plant is perfect for low hedging, mass plantings, or as a structural groundcover, and it pairs beautifully with grasses, nandina, and dwarf conifers, making it a sophisticated addition to any garden design.
