Description

What do you get when you cross a blackberry, loganberry, dewberry and raspberry? A super-juicy and delicious Boysenberry! From July to September, this vigorous berry produces huge crops of dark purple, oblong berries that combine the sweetness of raspberries with that old-fashioned depth of flavour you get from blackberries. They’re delicious eaten fresh or turned into jams and pies. Behaving like a blackberry but thornless, the Boysenberry bears fruit on long canes which can be trained over trellis, arches, fences or wire supports. Adaptable and easy, this strong hybrid berry is drought and disease resistant. Height: 1.5m (59in). Spread: 2m (79in).

How to Grow

Grow Boysenberries in a sunny position in any well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. The stems will require support - either wires stretched between posts or trellis/arches etc are suitable. Plant in a row, allowing 1.5-3m between plants. Water well and mulch after planting.

Boysenberries produce fruit on the previous year’s canes. After harvesting, cut out the old, fruited canes, leaving strong young new canes which should be tied together over winter. In spring, untie them and train along the support system.
