Description

Mid to late season (late July to mid-August). Blueberry ‘Draper’ is a vigorous variety, popular with commercial growers. It is distinguished by its very large, medium-blue fruit. Fruit is especially firm giving it a longer shelf life. Plants have an upright habit with branching, bushy growth. Draper is late to flower, so buds are less susceptible to frost damage. A good variety for colder areas of the UK.

Blueberries are packed with health-boosting compounds and are especially delicious in pies, muffins and jams. These sturdy shrubs not only produce high crops of berries, but make attractive features for acidic borders or large patio containers filled with ericaceous compost. In spring they bear masses of sweetly scented creamy white flowers, followed by fiery crimson foliage in the autumn.

Self-fertile, but like all Blueberries it will produce its best crops if grown with another Blueberry to increase pollination.

Height: 1.8m (6ft). Spread 1.5m (5ft).

Estimated time to best yields: 28-32 months (16-20 months for 3l potted plant).

How to Grow
Blueberries require a well drained, acid soil in a sunny or semi shaded position. In areas where acid soil does not naturally occur, grow blueberry plants in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous compost and soil based compost.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
If possible, blueberries should be watered with rainwater because the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Blueberries will begin to produce fruit in their third year. As fruits begin to develop, cover the plants with netting to protect the berries from birds. From their third year, begin to prune out the oldest stems each autumn to promote new growth and maintain a healthy plant framework.
