Description

Blackberry ‘Obsidian’ is prized for its exceptionally early cropping, producing its first fruits in early July, and even as early as late June in warm summers—making it one of the very first blackberries of the season. This superb season extender ensures you can enjoy fresh, homegrown berries well ahead of the usual schedule.

The fruits themselves are large, conical, and packed with juicy, fleshy goodness. The firm texture of the berries means they hold their shape beautifully in the fridge or freezer, retaining both colour and quality for longer.

‘Obsidian’ boasts a moderately vigorous growth habit that supports its impressive yields, with fruit displayed openly for easy and efficient picking.

To top it off, this variety shows good resistance to all major blackberry diseases, making it a reliable and low-maintenance choice. Whether you’re looking to get a head start on the season or simply enjoy high-quality fruit with minimal fuss, ‘Obsidian’ delivers on all fronts. Ultimate height: 2m (6.5ft). Ultimate spread: 2.5m (8.2ft).

How to Grow
Plant blackberry bushes in a sunny position in any well drained soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the ground prior to planting. When growing blackberry plants, support the stems on a framework of wires stretched between sturdy 1.8m (6') posts, or trained against a trellis or wall.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water well for the first year until blackberry plants are fully established. Train the stems onto their supports as they grow. Cover the plants with netting to protect the crop from birds as blackberry fruits begin to develop. Blackberries can be harvested from July onwards. In autumn, prune the canes which have fruited over summer to ground level. Canes which have not fruited should be 'tied in' to their supports. In spring, while the ground is moist, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the canes to improve moisture retention throughout the summer.
