Description

Berberis thunbergii ‘Orange Ice’ is a stunning, compact variety of Japanese barberry that captivates with its vibrant foliage, which evolves beautifully throughout the year. This shrub boasts an upright and well-branched structure, making it an ideal choice for smaller gardens, patio containers, or as a low hedge. Its dense growth habit allows it to fit seamlessly into tight spaces while still providing a striking visual impact, ensuring that it remains a focal point in any landscape design.

The foliage of ‘Orange Ice’ begins as a lovely coppery-orange in the spring and summer months, gradually deepening to a brilliant orange before transforming into a fiery red-orange in the autumn. This seasonal color change adds a dynamic element to your garden, creating a stunning display that draws the eye. In addition to its colorful leaves, the plant produces small, bell-shaped yellow flowers in April and May, which are not only charming but also rich in nectar, attracting a variety of pollinating insects. Following the flowering period, the shrub yields red berries that persist into the fall, providing additional interest and sustenance for local wildlife.

Hardy to at least -20 °C, ‘Orange Ice’ thrives across the UK and is adaptable to a wide range of well-drained soils, whether in full sun or partial shade. This resilient shrub requires minimal maintenance, making it a practical choice for busy gardeners. It can tolerate light pruning and is resistant to pollution and coastal conditions, further enhancing its versatility. Additionally, its spiny branches serve a dual purpose: they can deter pests while also providing shelter for various forms of wildlife, making it a valuable addition to any eco-friendly garden. Height: 70 cm (28 in). Spread: 50 cm (20 in)
