Description

Aucuba japonica ‘Golden Girl’ is a captivating evergreen shrub that stands out for its stunning gold-speckled leaves and remarkable ability to thrive in shaded environments. This compact plant is particularly well-suited for brightening up dim corners of the garden or enhancing the aesthetic of patio containers. Its naturally rounded and dense growth habit, characterized by short internodes, makes it an ideal choice for borders or decorative pots, allowing gardeners to create visually appealing arrangements without taking up too much space.

The foliage of ‘Golden Girl’ is a true highlight, featuring richly variegated leaves adorned with bold gold blotches that contrast beautifully against a backdrop of glossy dark green. This striking combination not only adds a vibrant touch to any landscape but also serves as an eye-catching focal point. In addition to its ornamental value, the female form of this shrub produces delicate purple flowers in the spring, which, when pollinated by a male variety, give way to clusters of bright red berries in the autumn, further enhancing its seasonal appeal.

This resilient shrub flourishes in a range of light conditions, from full shade to partial shade, and is remarkably tolerant of deep shade, pollution, coastal exposure, and even dry conditions found beneath tree canopies. While it prefers moist, well-drained soil, ‘Golden Girl’ is adaptable to various soil types, including chalk, clay, loam, and sand. Its low-maintenance nature, combined with its general resistance to pests and diseases, makes it an excellent choice for gardeners. A light pruning in spring is all that is needed to maintain its shape, and with its hardiness across the UK, it can withstand winter temperatures as low as -10 °C (H5), ensuring it remains a vibrant addition to any garden throughout the year. Height: 100 cm (3 ft 3 in) Spread: 100 cm (3 ft 3 in).

How to Grow
Aucuba plants are extremely resilient, thriving in any soil except those that become waterlogged. Spotted Laurel will cope in a sunny position but prefers dappled or full shade.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Aucuba plants require little maintenance except for a light trim in early spring to maintain a healthy well shaped plant or hedge. However they will respond well to heavy pruning in spring if renovation is required.
