Alder (Alnus glutinosa)
Alder trees provide a fast growing screening with attractive catkins in spring.
Growing in a tall pyramid shape, Alder provides a habitat for over 280 insect species. Early spring catkins blossom between February and April and the tiny, cone-like fruits resemble pinecones.
Alder’s dark green leaves are racquet-shaped and leathery
Tolerates most conditions and soils and Alder is especially at home in damp areas.
Long lived tree (up to 250 years) and will grow to 20 metres at maturity

The cooler, wetter months are always the best time to plant a tree and allow it to establish a new root system whilst it remains fairly dormant. Despite this, potted trees can be planted successfully throughout the spring and summer if they are well looked after. You may find other suppliers offer bareroot and plug plants which are often cheaper options, especially when buying trees in bulk, but these tend to take a little longer to establish.
