Description

Agapanthus africanus 'His Majesty' develops into a robust clump over time, characterized by its upright growth, which renders it ideal for placement in the rear or center of garden borders, or as a striking focal point in containers. This cultivar produces large, deep violet-blue to purple trumpet-shaped flowers that are notably larger than those of typical A. africanus varieties. Blooming occurs from mid to late summer, with flowers emerging on tall stalks that can reach heights of 4ft.

The plant features long, arching dark green leaves that are strap-like in appearance. It thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade, requiring well-drained, fertile soil while avoiding waterlogged conditions. Regular watering is necessary, allowing the soil to dry out between sessions. In colder climates, protection or indoor overwintering is essential.

'His Majesty' is versatile in landscape use, suitable for borders, containers, rock gardens, and coastal gardens, and it attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Once established, it requires low maintenance, with deadheading recommended to extend the blooming period and maintain a tidy appearance. Clumps should be divided every few years in early spring or after flowering. This cultivar is distinguished by its more dramatic and showy characteristics compared to standard Agapanthus varieties, earning its name 'His Majesty' to reflect the impressive size and color of its blooms.

When in full bloom, the height reaches approximately 120cm (4ft), including the flower stalks, with a spread of about 60cm (2ft).

More Info
Feed and water African Lilies regularly throughout the growing season. Leave faded Agapanthus flower stems intact to enjoy their architectural seed heads during autumn. When the first frost blacken the seed heads, cut the stems back to ground level. Protect plants outdoors from severe winter weather by providing a dry mulch of bark chips or straw in late autumn. Container grown plants can be moved to a frost free position over winter. Divide agapanthus clumps in spring when they become over crowded.
