Description

Veronica spicata, commonly known as speedwell, is a delightful perennial that adds a splash of color and vertical interest to garden borders. This plant is particularly admired for its dense spikes adorned with small, tubular flowers that bloom in a variety of hues, including blue, purple, pink, and white, depending on the specific cultivar. The flowering period extends from late spring to mid-summer, providing a prolonged display that not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the garden but also serves as a magnet for pollinators such as bees and butterflies, thereby contributing to local biodiversity.

The foliage of Veronica spicata is equally attractive, featuring lance-shaped, medium green leaves that form a basal rosette. As the flowering stems grow, additional leaves emerge, creating a lush backdrop for the vibrant blooms. This plant thrives best in full sun, although it can adapt to partial shade, making it versatile for various garden settings. It prefers well-drained soil and is capable of tolerating both dry conditions and moderately fertile environments, which makes it an excellent choice for gardeners looking for low-maintenance options.

Once established, Veronica spicata demonstrates impressive drought tolerance, allowing it to flourish with minimal care. Its hardiness across the UK means it can withstand typical winter frosts without requiring special protection, making it a reliable addition to borders, rock gardens, and cottage-style plantings. With its ability to attract beneficial insects and its resilience in diverse conditions, this charming perennial is a wonderful choice for enhancing any garden landscape. Height: 60 cm (24 in) Spread: 30 cm (12 in).

How to Grow
When planting Veronica, choose a sunny or semi-shaded position in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Veronica prefers a fertile, humus rich soil so work some well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil prior to planting.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Deadhead faded Veronica flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. In autumn, cut back old foliage and apply a mulch of well rotted manure to the base of the plant.
