Description

Staphylea pinnata, often referred to as the European bladdernut, is a charming deciduous shrub or small tree that captivates gardeners with its ornamental qualities. This multi-stemmed plant is native to central and southern Europe, where it thrives in woodland edges and naturalistic gardens, adding a touch of seasonal beauty. Its graceful, pinnate leaves create a light and airy feel, while the unique seed capsules and delicate flowers further enhance its appeal. The plant is particularly valued for its ability to bring interest throughout the year, making it a delightful addition to any landscape.

In late spring, Staphylea pinnata showcases clusters of fragrant, creamy-white, bell-shaped flowers that dangle gracefully in drooping panicles. These blooms are not only visually striking but also serve an important ecological role, attracting a variety of pollinators that contribute to the health of the garden ecosystem. Following the flowering period, the plant produces distinctive, inflated seed capsules that resemble small lanterns, adding an intriguing element to the garden. As these seed pods mature, they turn a rich brown and often remain on the plant into autumn, providing continued visual interest even as the seasons change.

This resilient shrub prefers moist, well-drained soil and can thrive in both sunny and partially shaded locations, making it versatile for different garden settings. It is adaptable to various soil types, including chalky and clay conditions, and is generally resistant to pests and diseases, requiring minimal maintenance. With its stunning golden-yellow foliage in the fall and hardiness throughout the UK, Staphylea pinnata is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a low-maintenance yet visually appealing plant that can withstand the rigors of winter without special protection. Height: 400 cm (157 in) Spread: 300 cm (118 in).
