Description

Skimmia japonica 'White Dwarf' is a charming, compact evergreen shrub that stands out for its tidy form and lush foliage, making it a popular choice among gardeners. This male cultivar is particularly valued for its ability to produce stunning clusters of white flowers, which bloom in spring after developing from fragrant creamy-white buds during the winter months. While it does not bear berries, its role as a pollinator for nearby female Skimmias is invaluable, ensuring a vibrant and productive garden ecosystem. The shrub's small stature and neat growth habit make it an excellent option for container gardening or for adding structure to smaller garden spaces.

The foliage of 'White Dwarf' is dense and aromatic, forming a low, rounded mound of dark green leaves that provide year-round interest. This evergreen characteristic ensures that the plant remains visually appealing even in the colder months, while the starry white flowers not only enhance its beauty but also attract early-season pollinators, contributing to the overall health of the garden. The long-lasting blooms are a delightful sight in spring, offering a burst of color and fragrance that can uplift any shaded area.

Thriving in partial to full shade, Skimmia japonica 'White Dwarf' is particularly well-suited for woodland gardens and shady borders, where it can flourish without direct sunlight. It prefers a humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral, making it adaptable to various garden conditions. This hardy shrub requires minimal maintenance, with no need for regular pruning, making it an ideal choice for busy gardeners. Fully resilient to the UK's cold weather, 'White Dwarf' is a reliable addition to any landscape, providing beauty and functionality with ease. Height: 50 cm (20 in) Spread: 50 cm (20 in).

How to Grow
Grow Skimmia plants in a dappled or fully shaded position, in moderately fertile, rich, well drained soil which can be neutral to acidic in pH. Avoid full sun, as this can cause yellowing of the leaves. Alternatively grow Skimmia in large containers, using a soil based compost mixed with ericaceous (acidic) compost.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Skimmia plants will require very little pruning. After flowering, trim them lightly to keep a good shape, and remove any dead or damaged growth.
