Description

Scutellaria resinosa 'Smoky Hills' is a charming perennial belonging to the mint family, hailing from the shortgrass prairies of Kansas. This compact plant is particularly appreciated for its stunning violet-blue flowers that bloom from late spring to early summer, complemented by its soft, grey-green foliage that has a slightly hairy texture. Its ability to flourish in dry, sunny environments makes it an excellent choice for low-maintenance gardens and xeriscaping, where water conservation is a priority. The plant forms tidy, low-growing mounds that add a touch of elegance to any landscape.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, 'Smoky Hills' plays a vital role in supporting local ecosystems by attracting pollinators, especially bees, which are essential for maintaining biodiversity. This resilient perennial is also resistant to browsing by deer and rabbits, making it a reliable option for gardens that may be frequented by these animals. Preferring full sun and well-drained soil, including sandy or rocky substrates, this plant thrives in conditions that many other species might find challenging. Once established, it exhibits impressive drought tolerance, requiring minimal watering, which further enhances its suitability for dry landscapes.

For those looking to incorporate Scutellaria resinosa 'Smoky Hills' into their gardens, it is versatile enough to be planted in rock gardens, borders, containers, or any dry landscape. To promote vigorous new growth, a light pruning in late winter or early spring is recommended. This hardy perennial is well-suited to the UK climate, capable of withstanding typical winter conditions without the need for additional protection. Its combination of beauty, resilience, and low maintenance makes it a fantastic addition to any garden enthusiast's collection. Height: 30 cm (12 in) Spread: 35 cm (14 in)
