Description

Rhododendron 'Satan' is a striking evergreen shrub that captivates with its large, richly dark red flowers, making it a standout choice for any garden. These blooms, which can appear almost black in certain lights, are arranged in impressive trusses and boast a velvety texture that adds to their allure. Flowering in late spring, this variety not only brings a dramatic flair to the landscape but also serves as a focal point that draws the eye and sparks conversation among garden visitors.

The foliage of Rhododendron 'Satan' is equally appealing, featuring dark green, leathery leaves that provide visual interest throughout the year. Its compact and rounded growth habit makes it an excellent option for smaller gardens or as part of mixed borders, where it can complement other plants without overwhelming the space. To thrive, this shrub prefers acidic, humus-rich, and well-drained soil, conditions that help it flourish and maintain its vibrant appearance.

While it performs best in partial shade, Rhododendron 'Satan' can adapt to some sun exposure, provided that moisture levels are carefully managed. This hardy plant can withstand UK winters, tolerating temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F), but it does require some protection from strong winds and harsh winter sunlight to prevent leaf scorch. Mulching around the base not only helps retain soil moisture and acidity but also supports healthy growth. Light pruning after flowering encourages a tidy shape and promotes vigorous new growth, making this shrub an ideal choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and collections of acid-loving plants. How to Grow
Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
