Description

Phygelius × rectus 'Candy Drops Tangerine' is a delightful and compact cultivar of Cape fuchsia that captivates with its striking display of tangerine-orange tubular flowers. These blooms, characterized by their slightly flared tips, create a vibrant spectacle that can brighten up any garden space. The plant is particularly well-suited for borders and containers, adding a touch of tropical charm while also serving as a magnet for pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Its extended flowering season, which lasts from early summer through early autumn, ensures that your garden remains lively and colorful for months on end.

This cultivar boasts a compact, mounding growth habit, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens or for use in pots. Its ability to thrive in front-of-border plantings allows it to be showcased beautifully, drawing attention without overwhelming the surrounding plants. To achieve optimal growth, 'Candy Drops Tangerine' prefers a sunny location that is sheltered from cold winds, as this helps to enhance its vibrant blooms. The plant flourishes in moist, well-drained soil, as it is sensitive to both waterlogged conditions and overly dry environments, which can hinder its growth and flowering potential.

In milder winters, 'Candy Drops Tangerine' can be semi-evergreen, maintaining some foliage, but in colder climates, it may die back and re-emerge in the spring. To protect the root crown during winter, applying a layer of mulch is beneficial. Regular deadheading not only encourages a continuous display of flowers but also helps maintain a tidy appearance throughout the growing season. This cultivar is an excellent addition to tropical-themed gardens, wildlife-friendly spaces, or charming cottage gardens, making it a versatile choice for any gardener looking to enhance their outdoor environment.Height: 45 cm (18 in) Spread: 45 cm (18 in)

How to Grow
Grow Cape Fuchsias in patio containers or borders, in any moist, well drained soil. Position in a sunny or semi shaded site which is protected from cold winds over winter. Container-grown plants can be moved to a frost free position over winter. Border-grown Phygelius will benefit from winter protection such as an autumn mulch of chipped bark or leaf mould.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water regularly until plants are fully established. Cut back old stems at the base of the plant in spring to promote the development of new growth. In very mild areas where the stems are not damaged by cold winters, Phygelius may be grown as a semi-evergreen shrub, requiring only light pruning of the stems in spring to improve the shape of the plant.
