Description

Photinia 'Blackberry Gem' is a stunning compact evergreen shrub that captivates with its striking foliage. The new leaves emerge in a rich burgundy-purple hue, creating a dramatic contrast as they mature into a deep, lush green. This shrub is celebrated not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its tidy, rounded growth habit, which ensures it remains an attractive feature in any garden throughout the year. Its versatility makes it an exceptional choice for low hedging, adding structure to borders, or enhancing the beauty of containers, providing a year-round visual interest that is hard to overlook.

The growth characteristics of Photinia 'Blackberry Gem' are particularly noteworthy. It boasts a dense and compact form, reaching a height and spread of approximately 150 cm (5 ft), making it an ideal candidate for various landscaping applications. While it may produce occasional clusters of small white flowers in late spring, the primary allure lies in its vibrant foliage, which is most pronounced in spring and early summer. The evergreen nature of this shrub ensures that it retains its structural integrity and visual appeal even during the winter months, offering a reliable backdrop in any garden setting.

In terms of cultivation, Photinia 'Blackberry Gem' thrives in well-drained soil and is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy conditions. It prefers full sun to partial shade, with the most vivid colors emerging in full sunlight. Once established, this shrub exhibits moderate watering needs and demonstrates drought tolerance, making it a low-maintenance option for gardeners. While it can provide shelter for birds and insects, it is not primarily a pollinator plant. For optimal growth and to encourage the vibrant new foliage, a light trim in late spring or summer is recommended, ensuring that this exquisite shrub continues to flourish in your landscape.

How to Grow
Grow Photinia plants in a sunny or semi shaded position, in any moderately fertile, moist, well drained soil. In frost prone areas, plant Photinia next to a warm wall or in the shelter of other shrubs. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Photinia shrubs at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Once established, Photinia requires only occasional attention, removing any damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant in summer after flowering. If grown as a hedge, it can be trimmed up to 3 times a year, from late spring through to mid-August.
