Description

Phormium tenax 'Flamingo' is a striking evergreen perennial that adds a bold splash of color and architectural interest to any garden setting. With its eye-catching variegated foliage, this plant features sword-like leaves adorned with vibrant stripes of pink, cream, and green. The unique coloration ensures that 'Flamingo' remains a focal point throughout the year, making it an excellent choice for garden borders and container displays. Its upright, clump-forming growth habit not only enhances its structural appeal but also allows it to stand out beautifully in various landscaping designs.

In the summer months, 'Flamingo' may surprise gardeners with tall flower spikes that emerge, showcasing tubular reddish flowers, particularly in warmer climates. This delightful addition not only attracts pollinators but also adds another layer of visual interest to the plant. Its versatility makes it suitable for a range of settings, including coastal gardens, mixed borders, and contemporary planting schemes, where its vibrant hues can complement other plants and create a dynamic landscape.

This resilient plant thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, demonstrating impressive drought tolerance once established. Hardy in the UK, 'Flamingo' can withstand temperatures as low as -10°C, although some winter protection is advisable in colder regions to ensure its continued vitality. With a height and spread of approximately 100 cm (39 inches), it makes a substantial impact in any garden, inviting admiration and enhancing the overall aesthetic of outdoor spaces.

How to Grow
Grow Phormium on fertile, well-drained soil. Choose a protected position in full sun. Phormiums are well suited to mild coastal locations and can cope in poorer soils, but do enjoy a fertile soil - so it is well worth incorporating some well-rotted manure into the soil when planting.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water regularly until fully established. Once established, Phormium need little attention, but will require some winter protection should temperatures dip much below-5C (23F). Where winters are particularly cold and wet, it may be preferable to grow Phormiums in large patio containers that can be moved undercover during the coldest months.
