Description

Grow your own pecans with Carya illinoinensis, a magnificent member of the hickory family famed for producing the nuts used in classic pecan pie.

This handsome, large tree develops a broad, rounded crown creating an impressive silhouette in spacious gardens. Its long, pinnate leaves form a lush canopy through summer before turning a brilliant yellow in autumn, delivering striking seasonal colour. In warm summers, female flowers are followed by clusters of nuts adding both interest and potential harvest. Best suited to the warmest parts of the UK, it makes a bold and rewarding specimen where space allows. Ultimate height: 20m (66ft). Ultimate spread: 15m (49ft).
