Description

Miscanthus sinensis 'Yakushima Dwarf' is a charming ornamental grass that stands out for its compact growth and elegant, arching leaves. This variety is particularly well-suited for smaller gardens, where its tidy, dense clumps can serve as a striking focal point or a low-maintenance accent in mixed borders. Its ability to maintain a rounded shape makes it an ideal choice for restricted spaces or container gardening, allowing gardeners to enjoy its beauty without the need for extensive upkeep.

The grass features narrow, finely textured green leaves adorned with delicate silver-white edges, which create a soft, shimmering effect in the sunlight. In late summer to autumn, 'Yakushima Dwarf' produces slender, airy flower plumes that emerge in a lovely silvery-pink hue, adding a touch of seasonal interest to the landscape. As a deciduous perennial, it gracefully dies back in winter, only to re-emerge in spring, bringing renewed life to the garden after the colder months.

This versatile plant thrives in full sun to partial shade, which enhances its foliage color and flowering potential. While it prefers well-drained, fertile soil, it is adaptable and can tolerate a variety of soil types. Once established, it exhibits moderate drought tolerance, although it performs best with consistent moisture. With minimal maintenance required—just a simple cut back to near ground level in late winter or early spring before new growth begins—'Yakushima Dwarf' is perfect for small borders, rock gardens, containers, or as an underplanting in shrub borders, making it a delightful addition to any garden setting. How to Grow
Grow Miscanthus grass in fertile, moist, well drained soil in full sun. Miscanthus Grass may resent soils that sit wet in winter. Prior to planting, improve drainage on particularly heavy soils by incorporating plenty of well rotted compost and grit.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water Miscanthus plants regularly until fully established. Cut back dead foliage and stems to ground level in early spring before new growth appears. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of Miscanthus grass every third year to maintain their vigour.
